Hearst Castle is located approximately 90 minutes from Avila Beach. Despite being far away from any major city, the castle which was once the home of William Randolph Hearst, hosts about one million visitors each year.

Perhaps it’s fascination with the story of Patty Hearst, the famed granddaughter of W.R. Hearst who was kidnapped and later joined her kidnappers to rob a bank; or perhaps it’s just the massive construction of Hearst castle itself that draws visitors. It is said that Hearst had the castle and grounds built to accommodate his burgeoning art collection.

The castle featured 56 bedrooms, indoor and outdoor pools, the world’s largest collection of exotic animals, 127 acres of gardens, 61 bathrooms, a movie theatre and a private air strip. Because of its remote location, the Hollywood elite of the 20′s and 30′s flew into the private air strip. Construction began in 1919 when Hearst took ownership and ended in 1945 when William Hearst had to leave Hearst castle because of his failing health. At this time, it is the largest house museum of the approximately 5,000 house museums in the United States.

Those who are fascinated with all things architectural, flock to Hearst castle each year to view the Mediterranean style houses, the enormous Neptune pool, and the various intricacies that make this castle so unique.

While visiting, there are a few thing to keep in mind.

You should definitely make a point to make reservations-especially if you have one day to go and see Hearst castle. You can attempt to obtain walk-in tickets, but they are limited and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you decide to go at the last minute without reservations, make sure you get there early.

There are five separate tours to view the castle in its entirety. Each of the four day time tours is $24.00 per adult and $12.00 per child, while the evening tour is $30.00 per adult and $15.00 per child. It is not recommended that you do all five tours in one day as it is probably too exhausting for most people. However, tourists do frequently book two tours in a day-generally one tour of the inside of the house and one tour of the grounds. If you choose to do this, make sure that you book the tours with some time in between for a rest.

With spectacular views and a rich taste of American history, Hearst castle is a definite must-see on your to do list while visiting the Central Coast of California.
