Solvang is California’s own little Denmark. Founded by a group of Danish educators in 1911, Solvang is considered the Danish capital of the world. True to its name which means “sunny fields” in Danish, this beautiful area of the Santa Ynez Valley offers a variety of quaint restaurants and museums and shops.

Of particular interest to young and old alike, would be the Hans Christian Anderson Museum which hosts original copies of sketches, stories and other memorabilia and exhibits celebrating the life of this Danish author. If you happen to be around April 2, the museum celebrates Hans Christian Anderson’s life with a big party in honor of his birthday.

The Elverhoj Museum of Art and History, housed in one of Solvang founders’ houses, offers the visitor an intimate glimpse of the area’s Danish history along with Danish artifacts and other historic photographs of Solvang.

While in Solvang, you might want to take in the Old Mission Santa Inès. This particular mission has been through rebellion, natural disaster, and financial hardships. It still today is a place steeped in rich tradition and legend. The museum on the premises houses a variety of historical artifacts, each telling the fascinating story of the mission in its own unique way.

Bird lovers from far and wide come to Solvang in pursuit of the elusive yellow billed magpie. While the bird is not particularly rare, it is exclusively seen in the central coast regions of California. As a result, the local Audubon society has put together a birding trail which leads would be bird spectators along routes through Solvang and nearby areas.

The adventuresome will want to make sure and take a glider ride while in Solvang. The mild weather and Santa Ynez valley breezes make this location ideal for gliding. Rides are given in two seater glider planes with experienced FAA certified pilots. A 15 minute ride will run about $125 but the view can’t be beat.

Shopping in Solvang is an experience that you wouldn’t want to miss. With authentically Danish trinkets and sundry artifacts from Denmark, picking up a unique souvenir will add to a memorable collection.

Before leaving Solvang, a visit to one of the many authentic Danish bakeries is a given when in Solvang. The Danish food is as authentic as you can get anywhere with everything available from Danish pastries to aebleskiver-a jam and powdered sugar covered confection that is best described as a “pancake ball.” Visitors often remark that the eateries are one of the highlights of visiting this quaint little California town.
